Arak El Massaya 75CL

Arak El Massaya 75CL is made by the Ghosn family at Massaya in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. They use white Obeidi grapes and green aniseed, distil it three times in wood-fired copper stills and then rest it in clay jars for between 12 and 18 months. At 53% ABV, it is a strong arak, meant to be mixed with water and enjoyed slowly at the table.

What It Tastes Like

It is crystal clear in the bottle and becomes a soft milky white with water. The smell is intense aniseed, with fennel and a little spice. On the palate it is velvety and well balanced; the liquorice is sweet but clean, and the finish is long and cooling.

About the 75CL Bottle

The 75CL bottle goes a long way, since arak is always diluted. We would suggest one part arak to two parts water, with ice added after. It is the drink we would choose for a big table of mezze and a slow evening.
