Hooghoudt Genever 5 Years Aged 70CL is a Dutch genever from Hooghoudt, the family distillery founded in Groningen in 1888 by Hero Jan Hooghoudt, who was a baker before he became a distiller. Genever is the Dutch spirit that came before gin; it is made with malt wine, which gives it a richer, bread-like character, and this one has been aged in oak.
What It Tastes Like
The nose is malty and warm, with vanilla and a little spice from the oak. On the palate it is smooth and rounded; grain, light juniper and soft wood. The finish is warm and mellow. It is closer to a light whisky than a London gin, in fact.
